“Horse” is a Pulitzer Prize-winning novel weaving together stories of spirit, obsession, and injustice through three timelines.
- Kentucky, 1850: Jarret, an enslaved groom, bonds with a bay foal destined for racing success amid the Civil War, where an artist fighting for the Union reunites with them.
- New York City, 1954: Gallery owner Martha Jackson becomes obsessed with a mysterious 19th-century equestrian painting.
- Washington, DC, 2019: Jess, a Smithsonian scientist, and Theo, an art historian, connect through their interest in the racehorse, studying its bones and the overlooked contributions of Black horsemen.
Inspired by the true story of the thoroughbred Lexington, the novel explores themes of art, science, love, and the ongoing dialogue about racism.
