Young playwright Melina Green writes a play inspired by her Elizabethan ancestor, Emilia Bassano, but fears performing it in a male-dominated theater world. Her friend submits the play under a male pseudonym. In 1581, Emilia, a ward of aristocrats, learns storytelling but lacks a voice. After becoming a mistress to the Lord Chamberlain, she plans to secretly stage her play with William Shakespeare as a front.
By Any Other Name intertwines their stories of ambition and courage against societal prejudices.
