A long history of early childhood research shows that reading to preschool children is crucial to their development of pre-literacy skills, and subsequently success in school. The 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten initiative aims to ensure that area children entering Kindergarten have acquired such skills through exposure to books and a language-rich early childhood experience.
